With the drive to net zero all industry sectors are looking at plans to achieve this through improved energy efficiency alternative energy sources. Hydrogen is seen as a key route to this through a fuel switch to use of blue or green hydrogen as an energy source.
Using hydrogen as the site energy source brings new opportunities and challenges in areas of Process Safety, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Engineering with any hydrogen conversion project bringing new equipment to a site but also repurposing where possible existing mechanical equipment inc Pipework, Valves, Vessels.
This free of charge technical briefing will provide an understanding of these areas and hazards associated with hydrogen.

Meet the Speakers
Steve Woodward BSc CEng FIMMM
Principal Materials Engineer
Steve has had 28 years experience within ICI both as a Research Scientist in the Advanced Composites Division and as a metallurgist with ICI Engineering Department. He was a Senior Metallurgist at Bodycote Materials Testing before joining Axiom 12 years ago and is now their Principal Materials Engineer. Steve has led innumerable investigations into hydrogen related failures and so has a keen interest in the developing hydrogen economy.
Oyinda Gunn BSC (Hons) MSc AMIChemE
Principal Process Safety Engineer
Oyinda studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Lagos, followed by an MSc in Safety, Risk and Reliability Engineering at Herriot Watt University. She has over 15 years’ process safety experience working in the Oil&Gas and Energy sectors with Technip and Whessoe Engineering. Projects have included incident investigation on refinery sites, design of cryogenic storage tanks and import terminals, HAZID and HAZOP of liquid hydrogen storage tank projects.
Conor Fraser MSc
Materials Engineer
Conor graduated from Birmingham University holding a masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering in 2017. He joined Axiom in 2018 as Materials Engineer and has experience in failure analysis, corrosion assessment and reverse engineering.
Philip Gardner BEng (Hons) AMIMechE
Mechanical Engineer
Philip graduated from Teesside University where he focused on researching into future energy transition technologies. He is actively following the developments and challenges that the industry faces as it heads towards a decarbonised economy and how hydrogen’s role along with carbon capture systems will contribute towards this.
Regional speaker
Wilton Centre:
Professor Nashwan Dawood – Teesside University
Research Director, NetZero Industrial Innovation Centre
Professor Nashwan Dawood will discuss the rising urgency of moving away from fossil fuels, the potential role of clean hydrogen as an energy source for the UK and the role of Teesside University in leading the way on hydrogen research with Durham University on an ambitious four-year project.
Additional speakers at Saltend Chemicals Park, Saltend, The Heath, Runcorn, Inchyra Grange, Falkirk, to be advised.
